What Are Passkeys?

Passkeys are a password-less authentication method designed to enhance security and improve user experience. Developed by the FIDO Alliance in collaboration with Apple, Google, and Microsoft, passkeys replace traditional passwords with a more secure and phishing-resistant alternative.

Key Benefits of Passkeys:

  • No More Passwords – No need to remember complex passwords.

  • Phishing-Resistant – Passkeys are tied to specific websites, preventing credential theft.

  • Biometric Authentication – Use fingerprint or face recognition for secure access.

  • Multi-Device Support – Easily syncs across devices via cloud storage (e.g., iCloud Keychain, Google Password Manager)

  • Stronger Security – Uses public-key encryption to protect your credentials.

  • Built-in Multi-Factor Security – Uses a mix of what you have (device), who you are (biometrics), or what you know (password) for extra protection.

How Do Passkeys Work?

  1. Passkey Creation – When setting up a passkey, your device generates a unique public-private key pair.

  2. Secure Storage – The private key remains securely stored on your device. And can be synced using your cloud account (e.g., iCloud Keychain, Google Password Manager).

  3. Login Authentication – When you log in, the app or website sends a challenge. Your device signs it locally using your private key and returns a secure response for verification.

  4. Verification – The website/app verifies the signed response using the stored public key. If the signature is valid, access is granted.
