When does the US stock market open?
The US stock market is open from 2:30 pm to 9:00 pm from Monday to Friday.
If you place a stock order before the market is open, the order status is left pending and will be completed at the opening price when the market opens. We'll send you an email and a push notification when your order is placed and when it is completed.
What is an ETF?
An ETF, short for Exchange-Traded Fund, is a group of securities traded like a single stock.
An ETF can be made of stocks, bonds, commodities, or currencies and are typically designed to track the performance of a specific index, like the S&P 500 index for stocks, the US dollar versus the euro for currencies, or the price of gold for commodities.
So instead of buying a dozen or hundreds of individual US technology stocks, for example, investors can invest in the US technology sector with a single ETF like the Dow Jones US Technology ETF.
What is a good faith violation?
If you sell a stock, you can immediately use the funds from the completed sale to buy another stock but you must wait for two business days after the first sale to sell your newly bought stock.
A good faith violation happens if you sell the newly bought stock before two business days have passed. If you make three good faith violations in 12 months, your trading account will be restricted and you will only be able to buy stocks with settled cash for 90 days.
What is a freeriding violation?
When you buy or sell a stock or an exchange-traded fund (ETF), the transaction is typically settled in two working days. Free riding refers to buying shares or ETFs and then selling them before the purchase has settled. It's a violation of the US Federal Reserve Board's Regulation T and may result in the suspension of your trading account.
